Plant Life Balance

Transform your bathroom into an indoor oasis

Bathrooms are weird rooms full of tiles and taps and toilets. Why not fill them with plants too? Not all of our lush friends love it hot and steamy, but we found a few that do.

There are three key factors to long-lasting bathroom plant life balance: humidity, temperature and light. Bathrooms get hot and steamy when we shower but can also become cool at night, while the light varies depending on your position and if you have opaque windows or not.

Because the fluctuation between humid and cooler environments will be a daily occurrence, we’ve provided suggestions based on how much light your bathroom gets to help make it easier.

Bright bathrooms with filtered sunlight

This is the ideal scenario because filtered light is typically more nourishing to plants than water when kept indoors. Plus, there’s moisture in the air every time you have a shower.

  • Bird’s nest fern
  • Bromeliad
  • Spider plant
  • Orchid
  • Fruit Salad plant (Monstera deliciosa)
  • Philodendron
  • Devil’s ivy
  • Peperomia
  • Aloe vera
  • African violets

Bright bathrooms with direct sunlight

A glorious position for a mid-afternoon bath or shower is not quite so ideal for most plants as the sun can burn their leaves, especially when focused through a clear pane of glass.

  • Jade plant
  • Peperomia
  • String of beans
  • String of bananas
  • Aloe vera

Darker bathrooms

There’s only one danger here: plants may not get enough light. Monitor their growth and colour as they may need repositioning or relocation to a brighter room. If they look sad, they are sad.

  • Cast iron plant
  • Spider plant
  • Philodendron
  • Maidenhair fern
  • Peace lily
  • Lucky bamboo
  • Chinese evergreen
  • Rhipsalis
  • Air plants

*NOTE: important message on plant owners’ responsibilities!

As plant owners we know the power that plants have to benefit us and give us pleasure. However, with great power comes great responsibility!  Plants in the wrong environment can become nasty weeds, so please ensure that you dispose of any plants responsibly and comply with your biosecurity obligations.
