Plant Life Balance

Leafy Beer Gardens of the ACT

Canberra probably has the highest Plant Life Balance out of any state or territory capital – it is the bush capital after all! Here are the greenest places we could find for drink.

Mint Garden Bar, Braddon

One of Canberra’s oldest buildings, Gorman House Arts Centre has always enjoyed an exemplary plant life balance that the tree-lined courtyard of Mint Garden Bar has clearly inherited. Hard to believe you’re just a short walk to the centre of town.

Rose Cottage, Gilmore

A sprawling property just off the Monaro Highway, Rose Cottage is both a place to have a beer from Friday through Sunday, or to reserve for your private function. A bush spot a world away from Canberra’s increasingly cosmopolitan CBD.

Parlour Wine Room, New Acton

Sitting in this lush courtyard among the lavender and statues, enjoying all-day tapas, we couldn’t help but think about moving here. Not a beer garden per se but really beautiful and they do sell beer!

Capital Brewing Co, Fyshwick

Apart from brewing some of the nation’s best ales, Capital Brewing Co’s sprawling beer garden is a wide open space surrounded by trees and peppered with patches of dog-friendly lawn – a game of cornhole anyone?

The Duxton

Impossible to miss at O’Connor shops, The Duxton looks out onto the neighbourhood’s iconic tree-lined streets plus indoor pots throughout the dining rooms within.

The Kingston Hotel, Kingston

A Canberra icon, the front gardens at the Kingo are neatly sheltered from both the traffic and the politics by crawling vines and other assorted greenery.

Royal Hotel, Bungendore

Okay, technically not in Canberra but so close and so green we had to include it! It’s a classic Aussie hotel with an expansive beer garden out back – do yourself a favour.
