Plant Life Balance

Plant Tales and Cold Ales…the perfect brew

What do you get when you bring together an architect, designer, gin distiller, and a landscape gardener?

The perfect creativity cocktail generously garnished with greenery!

On the 19th of February, in a ex-industrial-space-turned-hospitality-venue in Melbourne’s inner north district, we held the city’s first Plant Life Balance event. The night was a sold-out success full of plant-based food, drinks, and conversations set at the best-beer garden* in town, Howler.

With over a 1,000 plants collectively owned by the panelists – we knew we were in safe hands when it came to dishing out greening advice.

From left to right: Kitiya Palaskas; Jason Chongue; Jenna Holmes; Dave Irwin; Nick Casey.

It was fascinating to hear from Jason Chongue about transforming the way the next generation thinks about gardening and horticultural careers; Jenna Holmes on simple plant hacks to use at home (like using a compass to work out where the light comes in – genius!); Dave Irwin on sourcing native and ancient botanicals to add unique flavours to his gin; and Nick Casey on his ability to completely zen-out in his hectic beer-garden, thanks to the abundance of plants and trees in the rafters, walls and every corner.

If you haven’t already, send our panelists some love on their social media, and have a gander at our amazing MC Kitiya Palaskas’ crafty work.

We’re going to be sitting down again with each panelist one-on-one in the coming weeks to pick their brains further about their plant-y passions. Keep an eye out for these on the blog!

In the meantime, check out the snaps from the night below and don’t forget to keep posting your Plant Life Balance creations via #myplantlifebalance.

If you didn’t make it to the party  – not to worry, we’ve got everything you need to embark on your own leafy Melbourne adventure! Head here for our top picks in Melbourne’s inner-north, and here for Victoria’s greenest beer gardens. Happy exploring!
