We’ve got a new look in our app called Best Buds – perfect for pet lovers. So we sat down with Jane Wei, owner of A Loft Story (one of our favourite places), who helped us create the look to get her vibes on pet-friendly work spaces.
If you were an animal, what do you think you’d be?
I would want to be an eagle. Not a very conventional pet, but a very cool animal.
You’re not a pet owner yourself, so why do you think it’s important to have a pet-friendly work space?
As a business owner, it’s really important to look after you clients and cater to their needs. And having a pet-friendly space brings happiness to our staff as well. I personally love the idea of owning a pet but at the moment I don’t have time to commit to one, so having a pet-friendly workplace is the perfect arrangement.
Do you think it has had a positive benefit for your clients and staff?
Definitely. It also encourages clients to socialise with each other and creates a sense of community.
Sometimes one of our clients will watch another’s dog during their service, because who doesn’t want to spend time with these cutie pies?
It always brings a smile to our staff’s faces when they get to pat cute dogs too.
Plants and pets can be tricky, how did you go about designing a space that was suitable for both?
We keep the plants that aren’t pet-friendly out of reach (hanging high) and most of the time we have treats. The pets are always with their owners so there’s never been a problem with dogs getting their nose into the plants. They are happily distracted with pats and snacks!
Do you have any tips for the plant mamas and papas with furry friends?
I would suggest making sure the plants you are getting are pet-friendly. And also be aware that at times your pet could be allergic to certain plants you bring into the house. Pets have allergies too.
Do you have any other favourite leafy and pet-friendly places to visit?
I love Centennial Park (a great place for dog-watching) and Blue Mountains – you always see so much beautiful plants changing colours in Autumn as well. There is a tiny cafe called Produce and Fuel which is super cute – you can drink coffee and eat sandwiches surrounded by plants which you can purchase. I love the plants at the Grounds of Alexandria – a great dog-friendly venue in Sydney.
If you could spend a day gardening with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Probably my grandpa, who loves plants and is very knowledgeable and passionate about his garden.
